Esquilo Nest and community forum shutting down 12/1/2018

pjackson

I'm sorry to announce that we will be shutting down the Esquilo Nest cloud service and this community forum in two months, on 12/1/2018. We truly appreciate the support and feedback we've gotten from all of you and wish Esquilo had grown into a sustainable business that we could continue to develop and support. To pay the bills, we've had to shift our time to consulting and contract development services.

Of course, your Esquilo Airs will still have full functionality on local networks and you can replicate much of the Nest remote features with standard port forwarding. Scott released the ESTP server tunneling source here: https://github.com/esquiloio/estpd, but it will require some SSL wrangling to stand up a private instance and to install matching certs on Esquilos. I started a similar exercise for the Nest source, but it will require a lot of work to decouple it from the Esquilo cloud servers. I'm up to doing it, but don't want to if there isn't significant interest. Please let me know if there is.

We plan to leave our base website with the Esquilo online documentation up. Mouser still has plenty of stock (https://www.mouser.com/search/refine.aspx?N=4273576448) if you want more boards. I would also like to archive this forum somehow and put it up as a static page. Unfortunately, the software we use to run the forum doesn't have an export mechanism to support this, so it may not happen.

Again, thank you for all your support and for taking a chance on Esquilo. We really appreciate it.

This topic is now a banner. It will appear at the top of every page until it is dismissed by the user.

Thanks Patrick for letting us know. Is shutting down the forum because of cost?
The forum has a lot of great information and still search for stuff once in awhile.

Is the forum open source that I can get a copy and run it locally?

On another topic I posted a couple days ago, I was wondering if you are still planning to open source the code.

I know some of it you couldn't do that because of other restrictions.

I've started working on a project using a Raspberry Pi and Arduino together and keep seeing how wonderful the Esquilo is having all I need built-in to one board.

The only thing I really wish the Esquilo had was more program memory as I'm just about maxing out what's there. And figure out why I'm having web server problems.

Thanks,

Jeffery

Hi Jeffery,

Yes, the server shutdowns are due to cost. This is an open source forum, http://www.discourse.org/. They don't have a supported export that will work for us, but I have seen a post someone made on their forums of some scripts they put together to do it. I will give that a try.

On the open sourcing of firmware: It's on the list, but difficult to make a priority and to do it right. The RTOS license limits whats we can release and complicates things.

Thanks again for you support. You've made some really impressive things with Esquilos and participated actively in the community. If we had reached more users like you, we'd be in a much better spot now to continue work.

Thanks Patrick,

What RTOS does the Esquilo use?

Has the RTOS been upgraded since the last Esquilo release?

I've been looking at what it would take to do the same projects on a Raspberry Pi maybe with an Arduino, wow, all I can say is it would be very complicated compared to what I did using the Esquilo.

Thanks,

Jeffery
